The USS Clamagore, a submarine currently located at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Charleston, SC, is in imminent danger of being lost to history.
Clamagore was commissioned in 1945 as part of a major program of submarine construction during World War II. Although coming into service too late to participate in WW II, she defended this country during thirty years of the cold war. In 1962, she became one of only nine subs to be modified as a GUPPY III BOAT, with a longer hull and upgraded fire control systems. She is the only one of these nine submarines still in existence.
She was de-commissioned in 1975, and since 1981 has been on display at Patriots Point.
Clamagore is in need of extensive repairs and renovation, and there is the very serious possibility that she will be sunk to create an artificial reef.
This important piece of our country's history should not be lost. Even if repairs cannot be made now, the submarine should be stored where further damage can be prevented and repairs made at a later date.
